Introduction
UCLA is excited to announce a Call for OpenAI Proposals as part of a broader initiative to explore and implement generative AI technologies across campus. The initiative is rolling out in two phases: an initial phase focused on proposals from within UCLA Information Technology Services (ITS) and IT Strategic Partners (ITSPs) across the campus, followed by a campus-wide phase that invites broader participation from faculty, students, staff and researchers. Successful proposals will be provided with up to 10 ChatGPT Enterprise licenses and in-kind support for their projects.
Available AI Tools
Not sure how to differentiate between the various generative AI tools available at UCLA? We are here to help!
UCLA students and employees already have access to Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini (web-grounded versions).
- Microsoft’s Copilot provides an AI-powered chat powered by GPT-4 and DALL-E, allowing users to ask complex questions and get responses based on information from the web.
- Google's Gemini Chat is a generative artificial intelligence tool, powered by a large language with the same name (Gemini), allowing users to ask complex questions and get responses based on information from the web.
- Microsoft’s M365 Copilot and Google’s Gemini for Workspaces are integrated into their respective productivity suite tools (O365 and Workspaces), enabling the ability to ask complex questions and get responses based on information from your own documents. Gemini for Workspaces is not available for purchase at this time, but instructions on how to purchase it will be published on the generative AI website when the service becomes available. Schools and departments can purchase M365 Copilot licenses by submitting a license purchase request through Software Central (not available for students to purchase at this time).
- ChatGPT Enterprise offers enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customization options, and more.
Program Overview
The “Call for OpenAI Proposals” looks to harness the potential of generative AI to enhance learning, teaching, research, and operational efficiency at UCLA. The goals of the program include:
- Innovation: Encourage creative uses of generative AI technologies across various disciplines within UCLA.
- Collaboration: Foster collaboration between faculty, students, staff and researchers to maximize the impact of AI technologies.
- Capacity Building: Provide training and resources to equip participants with the skills needed to effectively utilize AI technologies.
- Community Development: Strengthen the campus community by promoting shared learning and collaborative efforts through AI projects.
Proposal Process
Participants may submit proposals outlining the project title, an executive summary, a comprehensive project description detailing objectives, target audience, AI application, business value, and expected outcomes. Participants are also asked to include the number of licenses needed and estimated start and end dates for the project.
Evaluation Criteria
Proposals are evaluated based on alignment with UCLA’s strategic goals and ethical considerations, innovative approaches to education and research, and the originality of ideas. They should demonstrate potential for significant and lasting impact, along with a practical implementation plan that identifies risks and challenges. Evaluation and selection will be conducted by a committee representing Faculty, Students, the Teaching and Learning Center, the Office of Advanced Research Computing, and Administration, including ITS. Notifications about selected proposals are provided after the submission windows close.
